Nursery
One
In Nursery One, children learn to make discovery of the world around them as they grow to become more independent. Our curriculum for N1 focuses on using hands-on projects and discussions to explore various topics in children’s interests. For N1, our teachers focus primary on the teaching techniques of guidance and listening, to better facilitate our 3-year olds to explore topics that interest them as well as building the foundation for positive behaviour.

Theme: Environment
Topic: Ways to help our environment
Activity: Learn about the importance of keeping our environment clean by throwing away trash and not littering.
Based on the topic at hand, children learn to love and protect their environment by properly disposing trash. In the previous lesson, children learn about the environment that they live in and why it was important to protect their environment. This week, children learn about littering through a fun activity of picking up newspaper balls and throwing them away at a designated place. Through this activity, children familiarise themselves with the idea of properly disposing trash as well as discuss about how they can help the environment by reminding others to do the same.
Our Lesson
Listening
Listening to children is an integral part of understanding what they are feeling and what is it they need. Listening is important for the children who are being listened to but also for our educators who are listening to acknowledge and understand children’s priorities, interests and concern, being a vital part of establishing a healthy relationship between children and our educators, essential to their learning process (Clark, 2004). Using listening as a teaching technique will provide an environment in which all children feel safe, confident and empowered, ensuring that they have the time and space to express themselves.
Guidance
-
The use of positive guidance in our Nursery 1 classrooms provide children with more opportunities to think independently and intelligently. By guiding children through predictable routines, setting clear rules and modelling kindness and respect, children feel noticed, confident and secure (Sanchez, Steece-Doran & Jablon, 2013).
-
Positive guidance will support children in their growth and character development as children in Nursery 1 are starting to make connections and discovery of the world around them.
