Nursery

Two

Within the Nursery 2 class, we offer a safe and nurturing environment for your child to explore and become independent thinkers and communicators. The classroom environment acts as the third teacher, and with careful planning and setting up, your child will access literacy and numeracy opportunities as well as develop his/her social skills.

Every medium (music, visual art and so on) invites children to consider a new set of challenges in order to successfully express their ideas, thoughts and feelings. With interactions, they build oral language skills and come to see mark making/writing and reading as valuable communication skills.

Young children develop familiarity with mathematics, science and technology through their daily interaction with the world. By providing play experiences and observation, we aim to form an important part of your child’s ability to develop knowledge and understanding about concepts like numbers, shape, estimation, prediction, sequencing and classifying.

Our Lesson

Theme of the week: Environment

Topic of the day: Our surroundings

Activity: Drawing what they observed from the environment

The class teacher establishes class rules and boundaries together with the children to emphasise on positive behaviours for the children to follow. The teacher reminds firm and consistent whenever she gives instructions. The class teacher redirects the child’s attention with respect, which shows the child that the teacher is guiding instead of punishing her for her behaviour.

The class teacher is:

➜ be sensitive to the child’s ability levels and judge when the child is able to move from one competence level to the other

➜ consider the time needed to support, guide and assist the child

➜ to use explicit hints, questions, modelling, instructions and descriptions

➜ use a variety of verbal and non-verbal teaching techniques (e.g. questioning, prompting, praising, confirming, point out)

Guidance

Guidance is positive discipline, which involves setting clear and consistent limits that foster self-esteem and independence (MacNaughton & Williams, 2009). Self and social development are prioritized in Nursery 2, teachers provide guidance for young children’s learning and behaviours when they explore their interests freely in or outside the classroom. Positive guidance allows children to:

  • Think intelligently and ethically

  • Find acceptance as a member of a group and as a worthy individual

  • Express strong emotions in non-hurting ways

  • Solve problems creatively—either independently or in cooperation with others

  • Accept unique human qualities in others

scaffolding

Scaffolding is the process of providing temporary support for the children, which involves the more competent adult/child (in some situations) demonstrates or assists the less competent child to promote independence.

Teachers in Nursery 2:

  • Are sensitive to the children’s ability levels and judge when the child is able to move from one competence level to the other.

  • Use explicit hints, questions, modelling, instructions and descriptions.
